The 40 yard container in Fort Lauderdale

The 40 yard is a job-site container. Eight-foot sides mean it is loaded by machine or by a crew throwing from a height, and 22 feet of length means it needs a lot or a long drive, not a residential driveway. Downtown Fort Lauderdale and Flagler Village redevelopment, warehouse strip-outs near Port Everglades and the airport industrial area, multi-unit renovations — that is where it lives.

It is light, bulky debris that justifies the 40: packaging, framing, fixtures, furniture from a whole building. Heavy demolition rubble fills the weight allowance long before the box looks full, so we usually run it alongside smaller containers for concrete.

Commercial demolition and multi-unit projects

Property managers turning over a whole floor of apartments, contractors demolishing an interior before a build-out, retailers clearing a store for a new tenant — these are the regular 40 yard customers. Storm recovery on a commercial scale is the other: after a hurricane, a 40 on a lot takes the fencing, furnishings and fixtures from several buildings at once.

Access and placement for a 40 yard

The truck needs a straight, level run of about 40 feet and overhead clearance for the lift. On a job site we place it where the crane and the crews can both work. For 40s that have to sit in a public right-of-way in Fort Lauderdale, the City's Engineering Permitting Division issues the permit, and anything that stays in the right-of-way beyond 72 hours needs a Revocable License Agreement — we will tell you what the City asks for when you book.

Suitability

Is the 40 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 40 yard for

  • Commercial demolition and build-outs
  • Multi-unit and whole-building cleanouts
  • Industrial and warehouse strip-outs
  • Large storm-recovery jobs
  • Long projects on a swap schedule

Pick a different size for

  • Residential driveways (it will not fit and you will pay for air)
  • Heavy inert material only — use smaller containers for concrete
  • Jobs without machine or crew loading
  • Hazardous material, asbestos, tires, batteries

Placing a 40 yard container on a Broward County property

It needs about 40 feet of clear, level lot or job-site access, and overhead clearance for the lift. On your own driveway or lot in Fort Lauderdale no City permit is needed; in a street or swale the City requires a right-of-way permit from the City Engineer (Engineering Permitting Division, 954-828-6520), and other Broward cities have their own rules — Lauderhill requires a permit even on a driveway. Boards go under the rails as standard. The permit guide covers every city.

Answers

40 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

Will a 40 yard dumpster fit on a residential property?

Rarely. It needs a lot, a long drive or a street placement with a City permit. For houses, two 20s or a 30 usually work better.

How do you load a 40 yard?

By machine or by crew. The sides are eight feet high, so hand loading from the ground is slow — plan for a skid steer or a ramp.

Can I put concrete in a 40 yard?

Not as the main load. Five to six tons is included and concrete hits that at a fraction of the volume. We run a 10 yard loaded level for rubble alongside the 40 for everything else.

Do you offer long-term rates?

Yes. Projects running for weeks get swap-out scheduling and extended-rental pricing — tell us the expected duration and we will quote the whole job.
