What Can and Can't Go in a Dumpster in Broward County

Most of what comes out of a house or a job site can go in a roll-off. The exceptions are about weight, refrigerant and hazardous material — and in Broward County each of those has an official place to go instead.

What Can and Can't Go in a Dumpster in Broward County

Fine in any container

  • Household junk, furniture, mattresses, boxes and clothing
  • Renovation debris — drywall, cabinets, flooring, carpet, trim, doors, windows
  • Lumber, fencing, decking and pergolas (cut to under 12 feet)
  • Roofing shingles and underlayment
  • Yard waste — branches, palm fronds, stumps, shrubs
  • Metal, plastic, cardboard and packaging
  • Washers, dryers, water heaters and most appliances without refrigerant

Fine, but weight decides the box

Concrete, pavers, brick, block, roof tile, terrazzo, plaster, dirt, sand and sod are all accepted — the Broward County Landfill takes construction and demolition debris, bulk waste and yard trash from within the county — but they are heavy. A 10 yard loaded level with the sides is the right container; the same material heaped in a 20 or 30 exceeds what the truck can lift and what the included tonnage covers. Keep heavy material separate from light debris where you can, and tell us before you load.

Not in a roll-off — and where it goes instead

  • Paint, solvents, stains and strippers
  • Motor oil, fuel, automotive and boat fluids
  • Propane tanks, fuel containers and fire extinguishers
  • Pool chemicals, pesticides, fertilizer and lawn chemicals
  • Batteries — car, boat and rechargeable
  • Fluorescent tubes and CFL bulbs, mercury thermometers
  • Tires
  • Electronics — computers, monitors, TVs, printers, phones
  • Medical and biohazardous waste
  • Asbestos or suspected asbestos-containing material

Broward County's household hazardous waste program runs three permanent drop-off centers, Saturdays 9am–3pm: North at 2780 N Powerline Road, Pompano Beach; Central at 5490 Reese Road, Davie; South at 5601 W Hallandale Beach Boulevard, West Park. They take aerosols, auto fluids and batteries, motor oil, cleaners, pool and lawn chemicals, propane tanks, fluorescent tubes, rechargeable batteries, electronics and up to five tires per visit, from residents of the County's participating cities (Dania Beach, Davie, Lauderhill, Lighthouse Point, Margate, Oakland Park and others) with photo ID. Businesses may not use them. County line: 954-765-4999.

Cities that run their own program — Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, Coral Springs, Sunrise and Plantation are not on the County list and hold their own collection events. Fort Lauderdale's are at 2201 NW 9th Avenue (954-828-8000) and take oil and latex paint, thinners, gasoline, pesticides, pool chemicals, fluorescent tubes, lithium batteries, propane tanks and electronics. Pompano Beach (954-786-4030), Coral Springs (transfer station at 12600 Wiles Road for tires and bulk; events for chemicals), and Sunrise and Plantation (Sunrise Public Works, 10500 NW 55th Street, quarterly; Win-Waste Davie monthly) each publish their own dates.

Refrigerant appliances

Fridges, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers contain refrigerant that has to be recovered before disposal. Do not put them in the general load. Tell us when you book and we handle them separately.

Asbestos: the Broward rule

Broward County Code Sec. 27-180 applies to every demolition and every renovation project in the county: at least ten working days before work starts, the owner or contractor must file a Statement of Responsibilities Regarding Asbestos with the County (online, through ePermits) and, where the federal rules apply, a Notice of Demolition or Asbestos Renovation accompanied by an asbestos survey of the work area by a Florida-licensed asbestos consultant. The County's Asbestos Compliance Program is on 954-519-0340. Asbestos-containing material is handled by a licensed abatement contractor, never in a roll-off; everything else from the job can go in ours.

What happens to the debris

Clean concrete, scrap metal and green waste get routed for recovery where Broward's facilities allow. Mixed debris goes to the County landfill or a permitted disposal site. Nothing goes to a random dump. Keeping heavy, green and mixed material separate where you can is what makes that possible — and what keeps your load inside its tonnage.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put paint cans in a dumpster?

Not wet paint. Dry, empty cans are fine; liquid paint goes to a County HHW center or your city's collection event — Fort Lauderdale's take oil and latex paint.

Can I put a mattress in a dumpster?

Yes.

Can I put tires in a dumpster?

No. The County HHW centers take up to five per visit from residents of participating cities; the Coral Springs transfer station takes up to two from residents.

Can I put concrete in a dumpster?

Yes, loaded level in a 10 yard. Heaped in a bigger box it is too heavy to lift safely.

Can I mix yard waste with junk?

You can, but the load then goes as mixed debris. Keep green waste separate and it can go for recovery at the lower yard-trash rate.
